Agriculture education continues to expand in Union County, with hands-on experiences and technology are helping students better understand the industry’s impact and future.
The annual Wake Up to Agriculture Experience is a key part of that effort, offering third-grade students from Union County Public Schools an interactive introduction to agriculture. Through student-led stations, participants explore topics such as soil and water conservation, hydroponics, livestock management, and heavy-duty farm equipment. Students also interact with farm animals, gaining an appreciation for how agriculture connects to their daily lives.
“The most rewarding aspect of this event is seeing younger children learn directly from middle and high school students. They gain not only valuable lessons, but also immediate mentors who bring classroom concepts to life in a relatable way,” said Crystal Starkes, 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent. “At the same time, the older students develop meaningful leadership skills, inspired by the enthusiasm and admiration of the third graders who look up to them.
The program integrates robotics, precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, and data-driven concepts into everyday classroom learning. For example, elementary students may program LEGO robots to simulate autonomous tractors, blending creativity with technical skills.
Since launching in 2018 for middle and high school students, the initiative has expanded into a full K-12 pathway, reaching elementary schools in 2022 and growing further in 2025. Educators say early, consistent exposure helps students build confidence, develop problem-solving skills and explore future careers.
Together, programs like Wake Up to Agriculture and the AgTech initiative are helping students see agriculture as an innovative, technology-driven field and inspiring the next generation of leaders in food and agricultural systems.
